Casey Cadile (1973-2013)

Dear Team Casey,

Our family wanted to share the news that Casey passed away yesterday afternoon. She was surrounded by her husband Sean, her mom Sue, and me (her sister Shannon), and slipped away peacefully and without pain. As you can imagine, we are beyond heartbroken.

To all who met her, it was immediately apparent that Case was someone special: in addition to being the smartest person I ever met, she had an incredible heart, adventurous spirit, and unlimited courage. She could light up a room with her smile, bring down the house with her hilarious stories, and instantly connect with all animals (people included) with her warmth.

I posted a few photos of her over the years – some of you will recognize the earlier pictures (with her horse, in vet school with Summer, partying in Southern California) while others may know the more recent ones (backstage at a Metallica show, at my wedding, and of course her wedding at Burning Man with Sean). We’ll be in touch with details for a celebration of Case’s life but if you are interested in making a gift in her memory, Casey chose three organizations for your consideration: Sempervirens Fund, Save the Redwoods League, and Surfrider Foundation. Love from our family to yours, and thank you for being such incredible friends to Case. You meant the world to her. --Shannon

Hi guys! I started my new chemotherapy regimen today, no problemo so far. My last brain RT session was on Tuesday, and the plan is to rescan in a few weeks to see how it all looks. Thanks to everyone for checking in on me over the last couple weeks, and I'll post updates next week!

I just got to see uncle Steve and aunt Glenda. Ate some bread, cheese at my place, hung out. Really nice to be discharged from hospital... Yaaa!! Not as dizzy today.

Got some cool news today. My pet-ct scan looks better since I started the gem-carbo protocol 6 weeks ago. Hi-YA!
Some of the masses (nodes) are exactly the same size, and others are 20% smaller, no new lesions, no free fluid in chest or pericardium. We celebrated by going to the Dutch Goose for deviled eggs!
If any of you guys knows a massage person who's good at a deep sports injury type massage, will you let me know? I seem to only end up with those 'feel good, relaxing' massage people. My neck and upper back are filled with big knots.

Cool news- we just saw the first group of whales swim by heading north! And it's actually sunny here- woohoo!

Things are going ok- had another platelet transfusion today. At least this time we did it before any spontaneous bleeding kicked in.

Sean and I went to dinner at La Costanera a couple days ago ( on the beach at Montara). I had one of the tastiest meals of my life- you have to go. If you don't want to eat in the main dining room, you can order from the menu downstairs at the bar- there's a sweet outdoor section.
Massive thank you to Joan and Raul for tonight's gorgeous paella dinner. I am so thankful to have such incredible friends around me. Looking forward to Amsterdam with Abbey and Linda in may!

Happy weekend- wahoo! Things are fine here in Daly City, we're getting sunshine at the moment, nice mellow breeze. Chemo (Gemzar) was fine on wed. We're going to repeat the pet-ct in about 10 days to see if we're getting anywhere with the new protocol. We decided to leave the meningioma in my noggin alone.

Hi guys! Just got carboplatin-Gemzar #2. Human medicine scares the crap out of me. Last cycle my platelets got so low (grade 4 toxicity) I needed a plt transfusion. He said no dose reduction for cycle #2. This is crazy- please wish me luck (and no spontaneous hemorrhage) :) the plan is to repeat PET-CT in 3 weeks... Hopefully we can beat these damn metastatic nodes into submission.

Hey everybody! Just hot back from an overnight trip up to Sebastopol. Planted a new redwood tree and scattered a bunch of poppy seeds. Have chemo on wed, so we're trying to enjoy ourselves to the max! We're also trying to coordinate a trip to Amsterdam for April :)
Summer and the kitties (aka the Meople) are doing great.

Yikes! Sorry I dropped off the planet for a sec. I got an elephant sized dose of carboplatin last week, wow. I feel a little bit like jello (or Gumby...?!), what a trip. Thank you to all of my awesome friends who've been helping me out with everything. Including my acupuncturist, who cooked a mineral broth for me!!
Did you guys see the Bay Bridge light up last nite? I want you to know that the artist is a Burning Man artist. Yaaaaaa!!!! You can sponsor one of those sweet LED lights for $50. So cool.

Hey guys! Thanks to everyone who swung by the house on sat- I had an absolute blast with you!

Just got 1st dose of a new chemo protocol today (carboplatin + Gemzar + avastin + zometa). The PET scan from last week showed cancer progressing inside my chest. At least this chemo doesn't cause the same crazy neuropathy as the taxanes... Will just beef up on anti-nausea meds.

Have a brain and neck MRI sched for fri, results next week.

Hope my sister doesn't mind my posting this freaking awesome pic... Heehee!

Hey friends!! Just got back from the Pacific orchid expo opening night gala at fort mason. They had some truly gorgeous orchids, and a couple varieties that I've never seen. They had some tasty cheese and wine sponsors. For the first time ever, I did not buy any orchids- what a relief!!

Hey everybody!! Alaska was so ridiculously awesome! Just made it back and am thawing out. We saw a pretty good aurora, took a sweet snowcat tour, hung out in an ice museum/bar. Wow. If you get a chance to visit Chena hot springs, do it. What an amazing place. And how they make it comfy and warm, amazing food, etc so far off the grid is nuts. They use geothermal power to grow all their own produce in greenhouses, they have 2 full time world class ice carvers, crazy stuff. Just blew our minds.

We found a really amazing brewpub near the Chena hot springs turnoff.
Ps the turnoff is off of the Ice Road Truckers road... we got our doors blown off by some insano trucks.

We made it to Fairbanks! It's -35f and I just saw somebody toodling around on a bicycle. It's midnight. Hardcore. Thanks to Greg for telling us to plug in the car (engine block heater)!

Hi everybody! Everything's going fine post-chemo, just having some neuropathic pain. Should be much better in a few days. I love Eddie Vedder's ukulele album, beautiful. . .

Happy Sunday! Still in pretty major hibernation mode post- radiation. Getting prepped for chemo tomorrow. We just cracked some crabs for dinner- Yosemite Sam went crazy! Summer is galloping all over the place... Everyone seems stoked! Beautiful sunset tonight.

Holy crap, you guys. I'm posting this from my actual phone!! New phone- my blackberry was driving me crazy. So now I have an iPhone! Things are going fine- the radiation folks thought my side effects might start getting better at the end of this week. Great news- just booked our plane tix up to Fairbanks AK for the end of jan!!

Radiation is over- haHAAAAA!! Celebrate!!!
It's time to have a sip of Caroline's egg nog, hehe...

Things are going fine on this front- only TWO more radiation treatments to go. Man, I am ready to be done with this! It's crazy with this Varian rapid arc machine, there's no redness or burning of the skin. Sean's taking very good care of me- tonight we had miso soup which felt awesome on my poor esophagus :)
